The auto accident rate in the Tidewater region of Virginia has decreased in recent years along with statewide results. But no accidents that cause serious injury or death are acceptable. Also known as Hampton Roads, Tidewater includes Isle of Wight County and Surry County on the Southside, James City County and York County on the Virginia Peninsula, and Gloucester County and Mathews County on the Middle Peninsula.

Major cities include Norfolk and Virginia Beach, along with Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth and Chesapeake. Early American history is on display at several venues, such as Historic Jamestown, the Yorktown Victory Center, and Colonial Williamsburg, the nation’s largest living history museum.

But while Tidewater is a beautiful part of the country to tour, some car accidents are unavoidable. Weather, wildlife, equipment malfunction, and road conditions can make driving treacherous and may lead to collisions. Often these conditions can be the basis of a lawsui t and may be followed up with an attorney. When a reckless or negligent driver is to blame, however, seeking the help of the experienced lawyers at Marcari, Russotto, Spencer & Balaban is a must to ensure you receive the maximum possible compensation.

The Virginia Department of Transportation estimates that in the decade from 2005 to 2014, vehicular travel decreased by 3.6 percent in the Tidewater region. Naturally, traffic accidents and especially traffic fatalities declined during the same period. The crash rate dropped from 2.22 crashes per million vehicle miles traveled to 1.76, a decrease of 21 percent. Yet, despite the decrease, the crash rate in Tidewater was higher than that of other metropolitan areas of the commonwealth, including Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Roanoke. However, roadway travel levels increased in 2015, matching the trend throughout Virginia and the United States. In the Old Dominion, there were 25,310 reported crashes in 2015, resulting in 14,955 injuries and 121 fatalities.

Each year since 2012, the number of trucks entering the Tidewater region has increased. Although the number is still below pre-recession levels, nearly 18,000 commercial trucks traverse Tidewater on weekdays, serving the third-busiest port in the country and contributing to the commercial vitality of the metropolitan area. Commercial truck traffic is most visible on:

  • I-64 — An average of 6,100 trucks used I-64 each weekday in 2015, accounting for 35 percent of the commercial truck traffic.
  • Route 58 — Approximately 4,100 trucks used this highway each weekday in 2015.
  • Route 460 — About 2,100 trucks use this route daily.

These top three routes accounted for 70 percent of all trucks passing through Tidewater in 2015.

Given the recent increase in highway traffic, the overall decrease in traffic accidents in Tidewater can be attributed to several factors. First, fewer cars are on the road due to the Norfolk Lite Rail. Second, highways and roads are safer thanks to new guardrails and safer intersections. Third, advances in automotive safety equipment and overall vehicle technology made driving safer for everyone. A fourth factor may be the significant decrease in drunk driving.

According to the Hampton Roads Regional Safety Study, causes of accidents in the city are distracted driving, failure to yield, and failure to maintain vehicle control. The use of cellphones, GPS units, and other electronic devices are increasingly responsible for auto accident injuries.
